We complain that the world has
changed a lot. Who is the reason? We leave a legacy of polluted land, water and
air to younger generations. What can we do to prevent or at least reduce the
effects of our mistakes? Simple things, can make big changes.
We tell avoid plastic, but who
cares? Rather than throwing it, use it to the maximum. Then dispose it as
non-bio degradable to the garbage collector. We can’t avoid plastic carry bags,
but see what we use is not few micron thin plastic bag. These micron thin bags
affect the land more than anything.
Then we come to electricity. Lots
of mails are circulated about switching off lights, fans, AC’s and computers at
workplace. We try to follow that, but what in home? I see people switch on the
AC and cover themselves with think blankets. We can either switch off the AC
and sleep without blanket peacefully or reduce the temperature to 27 or 28
degree celcius, so that the AC’s compressor is not ON always.
We can switch on lights at our
home after it is dark depending upon the season. Open your windows to allow
fresh air come in rather than switching on the fan. We complain there is no
air, then grow more trees. Using the electrical appliances for our comfort is
no wrong, but the cost we pay for too much use of electricity is long power
shut downs.
Ah, how can I forget the cheapest
yet essential one? Water !!
We have started buying water now, so I can’t
call it as cheapest. Act before we start paying for the air we breathe. While I
gaze at my face at the mirror and brush in the morning, why is the tap open?
Close it. Open the tap when it is needed. Use shower rather than bath tub to
bath. Before you open a tap, think; It is not water coming from the tap, but
think it is oil or ghee or whatever liquid that is precious to you. Then we
won’t waste it as we do before.
I have mentioned only few things;
but when each of us follow these things regularly, it is bound to make an
impact.
